Mercedes F1 Achieves 99% Biofuel Coverage in Europe as It Nears Net Zero Target

The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One Team has achieved 99% biofuel coverage across its 2025 European logistics network, marking a significant milestone in the team’s journey towards Net Zero emissions [1][2]. The Brackley-based team has been transitioning its internal combustion engine (ICE) truck fleet to Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO100), a second-generation renewable biofuel that reduces lifecycle emissions by up to 81% compared with standard diesel [1][2].

Since beginning its HVO100 pilot in 2022, Mercedes has avoided more than 1,190 tonnes of CO₂e across its European race and marketing operations [1][2]. The 2025 season marks the first time the team’s entire logistics system, including race transport, hospitality, and marketing support, has reached near-total coverage with HVO100.

“Our sustainability strategy is built on innovation on and off the track,” said Alice Ashpitel, Head of Sustainability at Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1. “Every kilometre travelled using biofuel moves us closer to Net Zero by 2040, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable high performance” [1][2].

The initiative, supported by PETRONAS and Mercedes’ logistics partners, aligns with the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive targets for transport fuels while offering a practical model for large-scale decarbonisation in logistics [1]. The team views its operations as a “test lab” for sustainable technologies that can scale beyond motorsport, from freight transport to manufacturing.

Complementing its biofuel efforts, Mercedes is also integrating electric vehicles (EVs) into its freight operations. The Mercedes-Benz Trucks eActros 600 completed its first long-distance journey for the team this year, travelling 673 kilometres from Brackley to Zandvoort for the Dutch Grand Prix. The electric truck reduces lifecycle CO₂ emissions by up to 80% compared with diesel and represents a crucial step towards hybrid logistics solutions that combine biofuel and electric mobility [1][2].

These milestones form part of Mercedes’ wider sustainability strategy, which targets Net Zero Race Team Control emissions by 2030 and full Net Zero across all scopes by 2040 [2]. Formula 1 itself aims for Net Zero by 2030, with measures such as sustainable fuels and renewable energy use at circuits.

By coupling high-performance innovation with practical decarbonisation, Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 continues to lead in embedding ESG principles into elite sport, demonstrating how environmental responsibility and competitive excellence can go hand in hand.
