PepsiCo[PEP:US] announced a global packaging goal of doubling the percentage of all beverage servings provided in reusable or refillable packaging to 20% by 2030 from 10% at present, as reported by ESG Today on December 5. The firm outlined measures to achieve the new packaging target, including collaborating with PepsiCo bottlers to manufacture refillable plastic (PET) and glass bottles, growing its fountain drinks business with reusable cups, and accelerating growth in powders and concentrates. It will also expand its SodaStream business, which allows customers to make their own sparkling and flavored waters in reusable bottles, both at home and in workplaces.
PepsiCo’s ambition to double reusable packaging is part of its PepsiCo Positive (pep+) strategy, which highlights sustainability and people while pursuing business growth. The pep+ strategy covers a set of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives across agriculture practices, climate, water and packaging sustainability, and consumer health. In 2018, the company joined the New Plastics Economy Global Commitment to express its commitment to a circular economy. In the meantime, it purchased the home soda machine maker SodaStream with more than USD3.2bn to reduce single-use plastic. Last year, SodaStream pledged to realize the avoidance of nearly 78bn single-use plastic bottles by 2025. Moreover, PepsiCo has vowed to reduce virgin plastic per serving by 50% by 2030 and reach net-zero emissions by 2040.
